Aquaboxes in Fiji Floods

ELTHAM couple Claire Georgiou and Marika Navuni couldn’t believe it when they heard the Fijian village they used to call home was destroyed in the Pacific nation’s worst floods in decades.  People they loved were left without clean drinking water for days, and the 46 people in their extended family’s village were forced to share two houses after the other seven were destroyed or left unlivable. Mrs Georgiou said she burst into tears when she saw the news footage. Marika’s father told her he had never seen the water come up so high in his life - his aunty’s house has never flooded in 40 years...  (Leader Newspaper)   Claire and Marika contacted a member of Eltham Rotary Club as soon as they heard about the flood and asked if Rotary could help; he told them about Aquabox. next day Marika was given 3 Aquaboxes, 30 filters and enough tablets to produce 30,000 litres of clean drinking water for his village.  He was flying to Fiji the following day so the Aquaboxes were packed together which enabled him to take them as personal luggage on the flight.  Claire said the Aquaboxes arrived just in time as disease was starting to break out in the village and Marika's young cousin had been taken to hospital very ill from drinking contaminated water.  The Aquaboxes will provide clean water until the village’s normal water supply is restored.
